#HackYourMorning #2: Get Up & Get Primed

I'm a morning person, so generally waking up early isn't a big deal for me. I know through experience that waking up early can be magical. The time that you get up can have a dramatic impact on the things you get done at a time when no one is pulling at your attention. So what's the perfect time to get up? That's the big question, and it's different for everyone.

I'll give you my experience on this one. I love to wake up around 4:45 am. I do this for many reasons, including the fact that no one else in my house is up at this hour. Not even my dog. So this is a time when I can prioritize things that are personal to me and knock them out. This includes reading my Bible, meditating, spending some time in gratitude, and setting the plan for the rest of my day.

My time with my Bible is important to me because it helps to get me centered. I love the Bible App because it gives me a good selection of reading plans with great devotionals. I generally pick something revolving around leadership, and it will incorporate some great words by the person who put the study together along with verses that pertain to the study topic. The Bible is amazing in that it is a living document. You can read the same passage but be going through different things in your life and you will get a completely different meaning.

My meditation time has helped me on so many different levels in my life by letting me see my emotions for what they are- reactions to what is going on in my life. It has allowed me to see that I don't have to live by my emotions- I can experience them for a period, but then I dictate how I act independently from them. Meditation is a great tool that, I believe, everyone can benefit from. Don't get sucked into the belief that it is religious. It's not.

Remember the last blog where I asked you to write down things at the end of the day? Now is a time to reflect on them and add to it. You'll start a new entry for the day and write down 3 things that would make today fantastic. These can be anything from business goals to personal things. Next, I want you to write down 2 positive affirmations about yourself. Basically, finish the sentence "I am _______". Now take a few minutes and think about 3 things that you're grateful for in your life.

When you meditate and write down your goals, you're doing something called Priming. This process can take 20-30 minutes but it is designed to help you jump-start your day. When you get the creative juices flowing in the morning they're much more likely to continue throughout the day and bleed into other aspects of your life. Give it a try!

Finally, before you leave the house, I want you to make your bed. Making your bed gives you a sense of accomplishment, much like checking something off your to-do list does. It starts the momentum that will make the next task easier to tackle, and it will continue throughout the day.

Starting your morning off with intention has a dramatic effect on your day. Give it a try for a week and see the difference it can make!
