Big Love And Puppets
So, for years now, I've been hearing about Squallis Puppeteers Puppet Prom and I've seen the mix of families and the late-night, artsy, bar crowd whom attend the event, always wearing something colorful and fun and always smiling and happy after they are out and about, after the event.
This year I promised myself I would go. No excuses. With or without a perfect date, with or without a perfect dress. I'm so glad I went.
I walk in the door and see the best version of any prom gym I've ever seen. There are hearts and lights and a set design full of cheer and fun plus there are 7 foot puppets dancing on the dance floor and walking around, along with a make-your-own puppet station for the kids and cute tables and comfortable chairs to sit while you enjoy the food and drink available for purchase from Wiltshire (so much better then snacks and punch, normally, available at prom).
There is, of course, a silent auction (this is a fundraiser to support Squallis Puppeteers and all the awesome work they do). What I didn't figure is just how over-the-top fun this could be. Plus I wasn't certain how the mix of families, along with lots of little ones and the artist and bar crowd would work together but it did.
From open, 6-9, it's more family friendly; DJ's and kid-friendly puppet shows and dancing and balloons and kids wearing tuxedos with batman masks and capes, kids in Kiss makeup and Harry Potter outfits and their parents in prom-wear and animal mask, costumes. Then at 9:00 p.m. most of the kids and families go home and the vibe changes to adult fun. Sam Sneed and Clay Baker are spinning music, there is more dancing and a puppet show geared towards grow-ups and it becomes a grand night.
When I left the event, reluctantly (5-inch heels were not the best call for a night where I would be standing, dancing and taking pics for hours) to move on to other venues and events, I was still smiling and happy because I just had so much fun.
Big Love Puppet Prom is now something I will be attending every year-one of my new favorite, annual events. Every time I think about it, it's guaranteed to make me smile.
