Choose Gratitude

Choose Gratitude

I talk a lot about gratitude. And for me and my journey, gratitude has been such an important piece of the puzzle that I have to give it the credit it deserves. It's funny how things work out, and more often than not the path you start out on isn’t the path that you finish on. And that's great because that means that there has been growth. And I’ve learned the hard way (is there another way?) that growth only happens through pain, through suffering, through the muck.

Life does that on purpose I think. Because when things are going well we just fritter away our time not really paying attention to things. But when something isn’t going right, we tend to pay attention. Pick apart our actions and thoughts and look for the reason behind things. And guess what? When you’re looking for something you generally find it.

I see a lot of people who aren’t looking for anything. They’re blissfully unaware of the greater things that are going on around them. And you know what? That's great for them. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. But what's even better is that when you get it, I mean really get it, the doors that open take you places that you never thought you’d go. It’s incredible.

I think this all starts with gratitude. Being grateful puts you in a mental state that you can’t get to any other way. It opens you up to appreciate the subtleties that you would otherwise overlook. It lets you experience the details. And life, my friends, is truly found in the details. I posted a screenshot from the Headspace app the other day that said “some people who have nothing are happy, some people who have everything are unhappy. True wealth is our perspective and the condition of our mind.” How simple and true is that? Perception is reality, people. How you perceive your world is the world you will live in.

So coming back to the topic at hand- I think it’s paramount to reinforce that it all boils down to choices. And we really have very few things that we can control in this world. But what we can control is our attitude and our outlook. If you choose to be positive and look for the good, chances are you will find it. And if you find the good you are in a position to pass it on to someone else. Give it a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
